With the growing demand for electric and hybrid vehicles, protecting battery systems from extreme environmental conditions has never been more important.

The key to improving battery performance, safety and reliability lies in the application of the most effective electrochemical protection materials, particularly in light of the growing trend towards high-capacity and fast-charging battery packs.

Electrolube UVCL for EV batteries and BMS systems

Electrolube solutions for comprehensive battery protection

Electrolube’s wide range of resins, protective coatings and thermal management solutions supports the comprehensive protection of electric vehicle batteries.

E-mobility application case study on the BMS

A customer in the e-mobility sector used Electrolube solutions to resolve an issue with an existing coating for their battery management system (BMS).

The BMS continuously monitors parameters such as temperature, voltage and current entering and leaving the battery to ensure it operates safely at all times.

Electrolube UVCL: BMS

The critical role of the BMS in battery safety

The BMS is a critical system responsible for battery thermal management, which not only regulates cooling but, more importantly, can activate other safety mechanisms to halt operation and minimise risks.

For example, if the BMS detects battery overheating, the vehicle’s power is automatically limited and the vehicle is placed in safety mode.

Technical requirements for coatings in critical environments

The electric vehicle battery company required a coating that was:

  • robust;
  • high-performance;
  • scratch-resistant;
  • solvent-free;
  • capable of offering the highest level of protection against harsh environments.

The UVCL coating, part of Electrolube’s wider range of UV-cured coatings, was chosen to protect the BMS with excellent results.

Properties of Electrolube UVCL

The low-viscosity, single-component Electrolube UVCL offers the highest level of protection for electronic circuits at high production rates:

  • The coating also cures in seconds when exposed to the correct amount of UV light and features a highly effective secondary curing mechanism, triggered by moisture, to ensure curing in shaded areas.
  • Electrolube UVCL eliminates the use of solvents, being VOC-free and non-flammable, and is applied using selective spraying equipment. It has been extensively tested with excellent results and demonstrates ease and speed of application in an automated process, enabling high-speed surface curing.
  • The UVCL coating allows for the application of relatively thin films and requires no dilution, so it is ready for immediate use. It also offers excellent storage stability and a long shelf life.
  • With the highest level of flexibility, the coating offers maximum protection in harsh environments, including high humidity, thermal shock, moisture, corrosive and chemical atmospheres, at minimal cost.
  • The conformal coating is also UV-fluorescent to aid inspection and offers excellent electrical properties with a wide operating temperature range from -65 °C to +135 °C.
